Aidan's Family Share



What's a better way to enjoy the beautiful, 70 degree weather than being outside all afternoon?  It's being outside all afternoon identifying trees and tapping sugar maples!  Thanks to the maple syrup knowledge of Aidan's mom, Mary Beth; and the tree knowledge of Aidan's dad, Jodi, we were able to identify many of the trees that are on the Caroline school grounds and even tap a sugar maple! 


We discovered several species of trees on our school grounds.  We saw Aspen, Black Cherry, Slippery Elm, Birch, Evergreen, and a few varieties of Maples - including, you guessed it... Sugar Maples!  We watched Aidan's dad tap the tree using a hand drill to make a hole and access the sap.  He then put the tap in and hammered it so it was secure.  Within seconds a watery sap started to flow from the tree.  What do you think it tasted like?


We felt the bark.


Then we tasted the sap flowing from the tree.  Tomorrow we will be checking the bucket that will be collecting sap overnight.


Aidan's mom made us some wonderful maple sugar cookies and let us taste maple syrup that she made herself!


A great big THANK YOU to Jodi and Mary Beth for doing such a well-planned, thoughtful activity with us for Aidan's sharing week.  We look forward to seeing what our bucket collects tomorrow!

March Madness

Welcome March!  It certainly came in like a lamb... I hope it doesn't go out like a lion!!  We have been very busy chugging along through 4th grade.  Here's a little recap to bring us up to speed....


In February:

Class does an AWESOME performance of "Little Red Goldilocks and the Three Bearpigs: A Play's Play".  I am working on uploading it to youtube.  Everyone did a fabulous job and really wow-d the pants off of the audience.  In the last post you can view a clip of our class performing our song: "If You Wanna Write  a Story".  Thank you for all of the parent and community support during that project.  It was certainly helpful.

The end of the Hangar Theater play allowed us to reestablish our daily routine, as much of that time had been enveloped by our rehearsals.

We did our unit on Magnetism and Electricity.  
Some important things to know about Magnetism:
  • Magnets are attracted to iron or steel.
  • If a material sticks to a magnet then it is made of, or partly of, iron or steel
  • Magnets have a North poled and a South pole (also shown as + or -, respectively)
  • "Opposites Attract" - If you put two positive ends or two negative ends of the magnets together they will repel.  If you put a positive end with a negative end the magnets will attract.
  • Induced Magnetism: the influence of a permanent magnet's magnetic field on a piece of iron, which makes the iron act like a magnet
We explored electrical circuits and build an electromagnet.

We learned that the wire had to touch certain spots on the battery (power source) and the lightbulb (receiver) in order for the lightbulb to light.  We built many different types of circuits.  Some had motors for the receivers, some included switches for us to turn off an off, others had two batteries, and some had multiple receivers.  


We learned about the difference between a series circuit and a parallel circuit.  

A series circuit has more than one receiver that is powered by the same power source.  In our case, we built a closed circuit that had one battery and two light-bulbs.  With a series circuit the electricity comes out the positive side of the battery and into the first lightbulb and then the second.  Because there is a constant flow of electricity from the battery, both bulbs stay lit; however, if one bulb burns out the flow of electricity is interrupted and the other lightbulb will turn off.
Here is an example of a series circuit:

The important thing to remember with series circuits is that the electricity enters
 the first lightbulb and then the second.  The second would not light without
 the first. I relate it to a series of books.  One comes out after another.



The second type of  circuit we explored was a parallel circuit.  In a parallel circuit both receivers share the same power source. The difference with this kind of circuit is that each receiver has it's own electric flow from the power source.  The result is that if one bulb goes out, the others stay lit.  This is how they finally learned to make holiday lights!  I remember how many strings of lights would go in the garbage simply because one bulb went out, causing the rest to go out,  and we had no replacements.  I'm glad they switched from series circuits to parallel circuits!

You can see that each lightbulb is connected to the power source and has its own flow of electricity.

Hangar Theater Song


We are in the process of writing our song for our Hangar Theater play.  It s a fun, creative process that stretches our thinking and rhyming skills.  Jan Nigiro has been the musician working with us.  He is in the group Vitamin L and is a very talented singer/song-writer.  We are thrilled to be working with him.  Here is a clip of our song so far.

Penpals from South Africa

Last week we began writing the first letter to our penpals in South Africa. Our penpals go to Maidstone Primary School in Durban, South Africa. Many students were very excited after spending much time researching Africa in 3rd grade. In our letters we shared about ourselves, our community, and our school culture. We can't wait to get response letters. How long do you think the mail will take to get all the way to South Africa? Any guesses? Well, according to www.timeanddate.com, the distance from New York to South Africa is about 12,548 kilometers or 7797 miles or 6775 nautical miles (by sea). Wow!! That's a long way! That's about as far as traveling across the United States and back!

Our school was lucky enough to host two story-tellers who call themselves "Beauty" and "The Beast". They engaged our minds and opened up our imaginations with their wonderful stories ranging from a version of "Pandora's Box" to a tale from their collection of "Noodle-head Stories". They spoke with expression and really brought the stories to life. They also told a story about how a tiger got his stripes. This reminded me a lot of our Native American Creation stories.

Trout in the Classroom




So, Miss Coffey's class is housing Trout in the Classroom: a program offered by the Floating Classroom.  We have been observing their growth for a past few months.  We haven't gotten to get in there to see that as often as we'd like to, but today we got up close and personal!  We broke in to groups and were able to introduce live food to baby trout for the first time.  We learned about the anatomy of these little creatures called Daphnia.  Daphnia, or water fleas, are found in Cayuga lake and they are a natural food for trout.  They feed from the algae in the lake and that starts the food chain.  

Each group got a beaker with a trout inside.  We made hypothesis, or guesses about what we thought the trout would do once we introduced the Daphnia to the beaker.  Many of us thought the trout would scarf done all of the Daphnia.  The trout went a little cuckoo when we put them in and many were eaten.  We timed the trout to see how many Daphnia they ate in 4 minutes and we tested out hypothesis.  It was very cool!!
